A walk in the park

Tuesday, March 16th, 2004

Took a wander around the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh last Thursday. The squirrels there expect to be fed, and will come and eat from your hand. A couple of them were very happy to sit and have their photos taken (although I think these are both pictures of the same one).

I have a fair bit of stuff I wanted to post over the weekend, but couldn’t as my webhost was supposed to be migrating everything to new servers. Various circumstances outwith their control meant this couldn’t happen, so I’ll be catching up now before another short break this coming weekend to make sure old and new servers don’t get out of sync…

Last word on the weekend’s rugby.

Okay, so maybe it goes a bit far with the rubbing of noses in it, but this comment on Ireland’s away victory over the World Champions does have a certain… charm.

These things happen in real life?

Wednesday, March 10th, 2004

A few weeks ago I was leaving our house, turning away from locking the front door, when I noticed that half the street was out watching a neighbour up a ladder.

Turns out there was a cat stuck in the tree in their front garden.

Honestly, I didn’t think that actually happened in real life. I wonder what the local fire brigade would say if you called them out for that. Haven’t they got enough on their hands to deal with, what with all the fires and things? Car crashes and industrial disasters? So kudos to the neighbour with the ladder. Also for the act of climbing the swaying ladder against the slender tree, in order to rescue the scared-witless (or maybe just witless? It climbed the tree, after all) feline ferocity.

Something I forgot to mention…

England 13-19 Ireland, match report here at the Beeb.

Twisted.

We were driving into town yesterday evening with the sun behind, glinting off windows of buildings on the gentle hills in front. With the colour of the sun, its reflections looked exactly like so many fires burning all around the countryside. One cloud formation looked exactly like smoke rising.

I have never seen a colour quite as fantastic as that orange.

What’s in the box?

Spied in the BBFC boxout on the back of a Finding Nemo DVD:

‘Contains mild peril.’

Can’t get out alone.

If you’re into singer-songwriter-y musical delight, head on over and check out David McNair – a great talent straight out of Belfast.

He’s got two EPs worth of MP3s there for download, and I think you’l like them. I am particularly enjoying Can’t Get Out Alone and Being The Strong One. I’ve known Dave for a long time (at school together, what seems like many moons ago), and his sound and his writing have matured over the last few years into something pretty darn good, if you ask me.

Anyway, the tunes are there for the taking, so go and check ‘em out.

Street Spirit as you’ve never heard it, although you may want to rush – it’s the kind of thing I wouldn’t be surprised to see it disappear pretty sharpish.

(Thanks to the boy Carson for the tip-off.)

UPDATE: It would appear I was right, as that link is now 404. Oh well…
