The Interpreter
Last night’s entertainment was a toss up between Be Cool and The Interpreter - I reckon we made the right decision :-)
Sean Penn and Nicole Kidman lead off in one of the more tense movies I’ve seen lately. The plot twists and turns all over the place (unfortunately not always in unexpected directions, but you can’t have everything), zipping around the threatened assassination of the unpopular president of a fictional African country.
Quite powerful in places, edge of the seat stuff, a whole lot of fun, it’s a handy reminder that both the leads are capable of acting up a storm - especially Sean Penn.
A topical take on the UN, also.
Go see.
(Nice trailer for Batman Begins, too.)

A poor choice would have been “Holywood rapes your childhood” or as its also known “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”. It’s… Everything you feared and nothing you hoped for.
Disappointing, but not surprisingly so.

Thanks for your comments over on my blog. I guess one of the reasons I found the film lacked a little of the tension it seemed to promise was that there was a certain predictability in the plot.
While I thought Penn and Kidman were both great in their parts, the storyline involving Tobin’s (Penn’s character) wife was laid on a little too think, thus seemed a little contrived.
But hey - I did like the film, and would recommend it to friends.

Hmm. It was a bit [*** MINOR SPOILER EXCISED ***] Could have had the same character arc without getting quite so… silly seems inappropriate, but I can’t think of a better word.
Although the whole movie is decidedly contrived :-)
