That's funny - I remember not being as impressed as I felt I should have been by that book too... Could be the translation - it was a while ago, so I can't remember.

Which raises something else I've been thinking about lately: translation quality.

I recently read Perfume by Patrick Süskind. It seemed to fall flat, but I couldn't shake the feeling that it was a problem of shoddy translation from the German.

In the haze of new-babyness, and while allowed to do nothing but feed baby Andrew, I read a trio of books by Isabel Allende. City of the Beasts, Kingdom of the Golden Dragon, and Forest of the Pygmies. She's a great storyteller, and really pulls you into the world she creates. Any of her books are a good read - my personal favourite so far is House of the Spirits. Best in Spanish, but doesn't loose too much in translation.
