A little video for you to watch, if you like — click through to the rest of this post.

It’s our dog on the beach this week. It was funny at the time. She had been running round with the yellow thing in her mouth for ages before this. I don’t have a clue how she got it so stuck.

Today is iPhone day.

The InterWeb is going nuts over this thing. And I’m sorry to say I can see why.

At this point I don’t know if I’ll get one or not. But I’ve just had my birthday, and a celebratory opening for self-indulgence, so maybe. Maybe.

Of course, I’ll tell all here, because it’s the sort of thing that amuses me. To my shame.

It’s mighty expensive (not the hardware, it’s iPod priced — which means pricey, but at a level we’ve become desensitized to — rather the contract costs to the mobile network), but oh so cool. And actually, no more expensive than I’ve ended up spending on phone for the last few years, as work requires it. But just that little bit less for the money.

It’s a sad case of gadget lust. And I’m torn. So very, very torn. And I bare my weakness for the world to see.

Sorry.

Matt & Liz's Wedding 17

There are things that I just can’t help. Is it a recognised psychological condition?

My wife went to the Natural History Museum in London last week. She brought me back this little photo with her phone:

Dino Skeleton

The low light phone-cam noise makes it quite sinister, don’t you think?

Listen harder.

Playlisting (and verbifying) again. Here comes my current RAWK! playlist. As ever, subject to change at a moment’s whim.

  1. “Rattlesnake” by Live (Secret Samadhi)
  2. “Naked” by Extreme (Waiting For The Punchline)
  3. “Texas Flood” by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble (Texas Flood)
  4. “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” by Jimi Hedrix Experience (Electric Ladyland)
  5. “Slow Down Blues” by Joe Satriani (Joe Satriani)
  6. “(I Just) Died In Your Arms” by Cutting Crew
  7. “Hotel California” by The Eagles (Hotel California)
  8. “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns ‘n’ Roses (Appetite For Destruction)
  9. “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen (A Night At The Opera)
  10. “Naked” by Reef (Replenish)

Plenty of guitar heroism here. Nuno Bettencourt (of Extreme) is a long-time favourite, and “Naked” is just great – smooth and hard at turns. And we’d be nowhere without SRV. Nowhere at all. I first thought of “Lenny”, but it was too gentle. We could have had almost anything by Jimi… “Hotel California” was an early inspiration, and it’s still makes me wish I could play lead guitar. But I can’t. Similarly, “Sweet Child…” must be included, because to do otherwise is just wrong. Note the absence of “Stairway…”, though — I have my pride (!). Actually, there are more classics here than I expected.

You’ll have to forgive me Cutting Crew, as I’m a long-time lover of the guitar work on this track.

And, of course, an honourable mention goes to this kid.

Change of heart.

This morning I came to a decision. I spent a few weeks trying out this BlogRush thing, but today I have ditched it and deleted this site from the network.

It’s a pretty harmless thing in itself, and it’s always fun to attract more visitors, but the widget that they give you to display is just plain ugly. I’m not pretending that marramgrass is a shining example of wondrous web design, but the BlogRush widget is just too much for my poor eyes.

My cousin over there on the sidebar (The Zoo OF Small Plastic Animals – a groovy name if ever there was one) has taken up the NaBloPoMo challenge (as has Ruth). Stephen has at last ditched that horrible Livejournal blogging thing he had going on, and appears to be approaching it with gusto. This is a good thing in many ways. The main one is that he tends to be a funny and entertaining guy (even without my family bias), so the more he writes and the more we get to enjoy, the better.

Of course, just reporting on that constitutes a really feeble excuse for a daily post, but it’s Sunday evening and I’m still fully medicated for the dodgy back, so what can I do about it?

I don’t know.

Is it sufficient for me to put myself on the line and hint that I have a couple of (hopefully) majorly interesting, entertaining, worthwhile and insightful — maybe even inciteful — posts half-planned for this month of challenge?

I hope so, because that’s all you’re getting for now :)

Frustration.

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

The cool and interesting blog post I had envisaged for today may have to wait a day or two.

This is because today has been spent fighting with an assignment for this course I’m doing. The fight was a little one-sided, since my brain is slowed by the medication I’m taking for my once again messed-up back. The report beat me to the ground repeatedly. What can I say?

Here we go again…

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

Last year was such fun, it really was a no-brainer that this year I would once again decide to take part in NaBloPoMo. Of course, it seems that November is never a good month for me to try this kind of challenge – there’s a lot going on again this year. Still, it’s all fun.
